The Department of English, RBD Girls (PG) College, founded in from the starting day of the Mahavidhyalaya, is the only Centre of Advanced Study in its discipline. English is an International language; it has become the Lingua Franca of the world. Without the knowledge of English no progress is possible. The department of English is established along with the establishment of the college to make the students aware with the foreign language and to attain destined professional goals. Most of the students are from rural background; hence our main focus is on the development of communication skills so that after completion of course they can compete in the race of getting better jobs. The department of English aims at students’ over all development – mental, emotional, cultural and social and intellectual.

The department is adopting various innovative teaching methods for the benefits of students. Lectures are delivered through PPT. Student also prepares their presentation and presents their papers. This technique adds something to their learning skills and expression power. Students prepare assignment under the guidance of lecturers for the proper understanding of materials. Their assignments are kept in the department for the students’ guidance. Group discussions are organised on literary topics for the development of their conversational skills. The method enhances their confidence level and deep understanding of a subject. Sometimes traditional lecture method and most of the time lecture cum discussion method is applied in the classes. The lecturers deliver their lecture and discuss the topic with the students to know the output. The department uses brain storming method to develop their quick wit and response. One question is thrown among the students and different answers are withdrawn. Students are often carried to the language lab to make them more proficient in communication skills. The language lab removes the basic problems related to their spoken and betters their pronunciation.

A departmental seminar is organised every year for the students’ development. Experts are invited for their encouragement and guidance. In 2010-11 the main topic of the Seminar was “Poetry as the Reflection of Life” with the sub topic- “The Major Elements in Modern Essays.” Students threw light upon the different aspects of different writers and cleared their views. Brilliant students got prizes and certificates. In 2011-12 the topic of the seminar was “Literature as a mirror of Human Society” The special guest of the seminar was Dr. Sunil Agarwal, Reader of the Department of English, Vardhman College Bijnor.

The department also organises different kinds of activities to enhance the linguistic abilities of students. The department conducts personality development session to develop their personality as a whole. The department also runs English speaking classes to remove the hesitation and confidence level of the students.
